Tomás João is a contemporary artist from Portugal.

His artistic approach has developed through experimentation across multiple media, guided not by the final result but by a perspective that seeks to study the human experience and reduce it to its core essence.

Over time, Tomás João has continued to explore the essence of our humanity through different media, including bioart, sculpture, photography and painting.

Although influences drawn from natural phenomena are easy to recognise, from cave formations to the intricate structures of insect colonies, what ultimately shapes Tomás João's practice is human behaviour itself. His work reflects on how delicate and uncertain the thin crust of our social order is. In the tension between civilisation's fragility and nature's permanence, his art dwells at the boundaries where humanity's constructed world begins to dissolve.

A sua abordagem artística desenvolveu-se através da experimentação em vários meios, guiada não pelo resultado final, mas por um olhar que procura estudar a experiência humana e reduzi-la à sua essência.

Ao longo do tempo, Tomás João tem continuado a explorar o que há de essencial na nossa humanidade, recorrendo a diferentes linguagens: bioarte, escultura, fotografia e pintura, entre outras.

Embora se reconheçam facilmente influências de fenómenos naturais, das formações das grutas às estruturas complexas das colónias de insetos, o que verdadeiramente molda a prática de Tomás João é o comportamento humano. O seu trabalho reflete sobre a fragilidade e a incerteza da fina crosta que sustenta a nossa ordem social. Na tensão entre a fragilidade da civilização e a permanência da natureza, a sua arte situa-se nos limites onde o mundo construído pelo ser humano começa a dissolver-se.
